Air Conditioning – What to Expect when a Comfort Specialist Visits You

air conditioning installersWhat to do you do when your air conditioner has broken for the last time?  Look to Home-Tech to help you find the right replacement air conditioning system for your home.

Comfort Specialists Make It Easy

It’s hot. We know it. But, being without air conditioning during the hot summer months can be unbearable. So, you did the right thing and called Home-Tech to purchase a replacement air conditioning system. You did your research and found that we sell air conditioning systems from Carrier, Trane, Maytag, and Amana, and can repair any brand!

You’ve read our customer testimonials, and seen our trucks. Friends and neighbors of yours have told you how wonderful our air conditioning service is and now you are ready to be a part of the Home-Tech team. You’ve scheduled your appointment with one of our experienced Comfort Specialists, and we are here to tell you to relax. You are in good hands.

Our Comfort Specialists have a high tech, but easily understood, quote or proposal for you.  That way you can make the best decision for your air conditioning system replacement.  Our consumers like that our technicians present this information in a professional, LOW PRESSURE way.

Our Goals for Your AC System ReplacementAir conditioning sales rep

  • To provide comfort, air conditioning and/or heating
  • To solve your cooling and heating problems
  • To educate our customers
  • To provide you with all the information they need
  • To provide you with a list of warning signs that you can recognize, so you can identify when a problem begins
  • And to educate you about necessary maintenance. We want you to get the most out of your air conditioning system replacement.

A Home Visit from Home-Tech

When our Comfort Specialist arrives at your home, these are some things you can expect from a qualified heating and air conditioning dealer, like Home-Tech to address when you’re purchasing a new system:

  • Calculating energy savings with a new system. You may find that investing in a new energy-efficient system will yield monthly savings greater than money earned on a CD investment or savings account.
  • Educating you about the system and equipment (provide all instructions and manufacturer’s documents, including warranties).
  • Selecting the type of system and equipment (plus operating and safety controls) that are compatible with the architecture of your home, fuel availability, fuel costs, the space available for equipment and duct runs, appearance issues and project cost.
  • Using the proper industry manual procedures and manufacturer’s data to select, size and place equipment, supply outlets, ducts and returns.
  • Performing load or sizing calculations for each room and the load on the central unit(s). New homes are better insulated and do not have the same capacity requirements as older homes. Over-sizing a unit can contribute to uncomfortable temperatures and inefficient performance.
  • Disposing of old equipment.
  • Installing the refrigerant lines.
  • Installing to local, state and federal codes and utility regulations.
  • Installing the indoor and outdoor equipment. A split system is the most common installation.
  • Installing supply air outlets and returns if they do not exist or are inadequate.
  • Installing duct runs (must be sealed and insulated to R-6 or R-8 if in unconditioned space) if they do not exist or are inadequate.
  • Installing control system(s), such as thermostats and/or zoning controls.
  • Installing furnace gas piping and vent (if applicable).
  • Measuring and adjusting air flow at the unit and at the rooms (balancing work).
  • Checking refrigerant charge.
  • Charging the refrigerant system.
  • Checking all control cycles.
  • Checking all power supplies, connections, fuel trains and vents.

Appliances- Ventilation Systems / Hoods for Clean and Healthy Kitchens

Need to Vent? Appliances, like your range or cooktop, need a ventilation system to clear the air of smoke, steam, grease, unhealthy airborne contaminants and odors.

Kitchen Ventilation 101

When you cook moisture, gas, grease, and smoke are released into the air and then settle on furniture, cabinets, window sills, and paint. These fumes are destructive to your home furnishings as well as air quality. A ventilation hood is one of the most important appliances in your kitchen. While most people have a fan that is built into their above-stove microwave, this fan may not be providing the kind of ventilation that suits your culinary needs. A microwave ventilation system can handle some steam, but can not properly ventilate smoke from burning food on the cooktop.

Style Options

Appliances---ventilation-hood types

Appliances---ventilation-hood types

Whether you stay with the brand name of the appliances you already have or choose to install designer pieces, they will match seamlessly with your other kitchen appliances and style. Many cook top ranges often have matching hoods and ventilation systems making it easy to match with your existing appliances. There are five different hood options for your range or stove appliances:

  1. Island-Mount Canopy Hood: Ideal for a cooktop or range installed in an island or peninsula.
  2. Wall-Mount Canopy: Provide the most performance and design options, while offering highly efficient venting for your appliances.
  3. Custom Hood Liner or Inserts: Commercial-style performance for custom applications. The liner can be mounted inside of a hood created from any material you choose.
  4. Retractable Downdraft System: Another popular choice for island or peninsula cooking areas. These downdraft ventilation systems for appliances are also called “pop-up” hoods, as they remain flush with the cooktop surface until needed.
  5. Under the Cabinet Hoods: Allow you to hide the duct work in the above cabinet.

High Performance in the Hood

When choosing a cooktop hood it should be at least as wide as the range, and cover 50% or more of the front burners. When cooking on the stove top you want to maximize the area where air will be trapped under the hood. Gases, smoke, steam, and grease will rise up in the hot air and should be caught by the range top hood.  The more the hood covers the top of the stove, the cleaner your air will be.

Tip: Look at the CFM number- the higher the number = the more powerful the ventilation. The air fan quality is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM) and the standard minimum is usually around 40 CFM. If you are using professional grade kitchen appliances, you should make sure your hood fan is 50 CFM or higher. Centrifugal fans move air quietly and quickly.

appliances---whirlpool-ventilation hood

Appliances - Hood from Whirlpool

The Whirlpool Gold® 30-inch Convertible Wall-Mount with Glass Canopy Hood, for example, has:

  • 400 CFM centrifugal blower
  • 3-speed push button controls
  • incandescent lighting
  • dishwasher-safe mesh filters

All Vented Out?

If you’re in need of some new kitchen ventilation appliances, look no further than Home-Tech. With our two southwest Florida showrooms, we can surely show you hoods and ventilation systems that will blend perfectly into your kitchen while providing superior performance.  If your microwave ventilation system isn’t working properly, or makes a lot of noise with little or no suction, you may need Home-Tech Appliance Repair services. You Get a Friend When You Get a Service Agreement with Us

Service Agreement

Name: Jacqueline Maxwell
Position: Service Agreements, Inside Sales

Number of Years with Home-Tech: 21

What positions have you held at Home-Tech?

Customer Service, Dispatch, Venice Office Team Member in Parts/ Service Agreements/Dispatch, HCA Department Member.

What are the BEST benefits?

If time is short, I quickly try to highlight the main benefits of our Service Agreement contract.  The main points I focus on are:

  • No Service Call Fee
  • No Deductible
  • The main differences on what we cover vs. our competition

What surprises people the most when you explain Home-Tech and the Service Agreement?

Most people are shocked when we tell them we will replace an appliance under the age of ten years old, if it is irreparable.  In our Sarasota service area, they are surprised that we have been in business so long and have been servicing that area for more than 30 years.

What are some of the challenges of being a Service Agreement salesperson?

Here is an excellent example of a challenging Service Agreement sale.  There was a potential customer who I was communicating with over the course of six months.  During this time, we went back and forth on every option to add on to the Agreement.  In the end,  this customer was glad to purchase a Service Agreement.  But it taught me any important lesson – Patience.  There are some people who will call back a year or year and a half after our initial conversation, and then be ready to sign up for a Service Agreement.

Can you share with us an example of a Service Agreement success story?

We have one client in particular who has a love/hate relationship with Home-Tech.  He loves us so much that he constantly sends us referrals.  One day, we hit a minor repair snag.  He vowed he was finished with Home-Tech and would no longer refer his neighbors to us.  Low and behold, not more than two weeks later, a call comes through from this client again, with a group of new referrals.  Some of our customers are like family.  This client and I may go back and forth at times, but in the end, he knows he can always rely on service and professionalism from Home-Tech.  We appreciate his business as much as he appreciates ours.  For me, building personal relationships with our customers means so much to me, and this really shows our customers that you get a friend when you get a service agreement.

Tell us a secret.

My daughter is four months pregnant with twins, who we lovingly have named “Thing 1 & Thing 2.”  We find out on Tuesday if she is having boys and/or girls.

Peace of Mind is Golden

Our customers love the convenience and savings of the Home-Tech Service Agreement.  When your air conditioner or major appliance breaks down, you make ONE call.  Home-Tech offers three plan types of coverage, to fit every Southwest Florida homeowner’s needs.  With highly trained technicians ready to make a repair, peace of mind and quality service is what you’ll enjoy.  For more information about Home-Tech’s Service Agreements, please check out our plans online or call us at 800-800-8356.

Air Conditioning: Selecting the Best Company for AC Sales and Service

air conditioning groupThere are two important considerations when selecting a new heating and air system:

1. Hire a Quality Licensed Air Conditioning Contractor

With central air conditioning and heating, product performance and reliability are directly tied to the company’s ability to design and install a system compatible for your home. The lowest price may not provide the highest quality installation.

2. Ask the Right Questions

Because heating or cooling purchases happen maybe once every 16-20 years, you may not be up to speed on new technologies or solutions available to correct common indoor problems. If you don’t speak up, the sales associate may assume you’re not interested in lowering utility bills, saving energy, reducing hot and cold spots or improving your indoor air quality.

What You Need to KnowAir conditioning truck

Here’s how to make sure you are selecting the right company to purchase and install your new heating and air system. The goal for you is to purchase a correctly sized system that is also properly installed.

  • Typically, manufacturer warranties cover the replacement of faulty components for a limited time (Maytag® is 12 years when the warranty is registered). Failure due to poor installation is typically not warranted by manufacturers. Select a dealer and installer, like Home-Tech, who will do a good job the first time and be around to service your system and assist you as needed.
  • A quality installation takes more time to complete. Expect to pay more upfront for comprehensive service, but much less in the long run for system service and maintenance.
  • A Comfort Specialist coming into your home should do more than just inspect your current system. Our specialists check airflow, inspect the duct system, make note of the windows and the direction your home faces.
  • Ask how long the company has been in business and if they offer 24/7 service, financing or accept credit cards.
  • Ask if the dealer possesses all of the appropriate licensing for installing air conditioning and heating equipment in your state and local area. Home-Tech’s Tech Reps are NATE Certified and licensed.
  • A knowledgeable air conditioning dealer and installer has your best interests at heart and will ask about your comfort in the home, how long you have lived there, how long you plan to stay, if you have allergies, pets, smokers, hot and cold spots or excessive noise.
  • A Home-Tech installer has the tools to address your home comfort issues, will offer solutions such as programmable thermostats, humidifiers, air cleaners and variable-speed and two-stage technology.
  • Be leery of a dealer or contractor who quotes you a price on the back of a business card after just a few minutes, and especially if it’s over the phone.
  • Consider a Service Agreement for extended peace of mind and maintenance on your new air conditioning system.

New Appliances Advanced Technologies

washer vintageDo you remember when your washer had a wringer on it? Yes, back in the day the washing machines did not have any mechanism to remove the water from the clothing.  You had to physically run each piece through the wringer.  You’ve probably heard the phrase, “I feel like I’ve been put through the wringer.”  Well now you know where that comes from.  One of our most relied upon appliances has made some serious headway since its hand-wringed days. I’m sure most housewives back then were thrilled too to be moving up from a bucket, creek and rock.

Today’s washing machines, like the Electrolux 4.2 Cu. Ft. Front Load Washer with IQ-Touch Controls EIFLW50LIW have all kinds of advanced technologies like:

AquaLux Wash SystemAdvanced wash technology includes wash motions and bottom-vent steam options with superior cleaning performance.

By offering reversible washer doors, Electrolux allows for any laundry room to be a customizable space.

  • IQ-Touch™ Controls

  • A “My Favorite” Setting

A setting you can customize to meet your needs, so the option you want is available at the touch of a button.

  • Perfect Balance ® System

No other washer has less vibration. State-of-the-art technology keeps even oversized wash loads balanced for smooth, quiet operation. Perfect for installation upstairs – even near bedrooms.

Our design interior lighting provides visibility inside your washer, so you can conveniently find any article of clothing.

Appliance dryer keeping clothes freshYour Clothes Got Out More Often Than You Did

There wasn’t a household on the block that didn’t have a full fledged laundry line with clothes drying on it almost every day.  There is nothing quite like the smell of freshly hung clothes.  There are still some people today that prefer to hang their sheets out to dry, but most now rely on one of their favorite appliances, the dryer, and wonderful smelling fabric sheets to try to duplicate that fresh smell.

The technologies in today’s dryers are incredible and hard to now live without:

  • 7.4 Cu. Ft. Capacity in the Whirlpool Cabrio High Efficiency Electric Dryer
  • Wrinkle Shield™ Plus Option (up to 90 Minutes): Tumbles the dryer every 5 minutes after the cycle is complete to help prevent wrinkles from setting into clean, dry fabrics. The intermittent tumbling continues for the designated time or until the door is opened.
  • AccuDry™ Drying System:  Measures moisture and temperature levels to automatically stop the cycle when the load is dry, helping to conserve up to 10% energy.
  • 10 Automatic Cycles
  • 4 Temperature Settings

Your Refrigerator Didn’t Make Ice – You Had to Put the Ice In Itservice agreement home-tech repair appliances air conditioning

Before electricity, if you wanted to keep foods cold you used an ice box which held a huge piece of ice delivered to you by the ice man.  You had to empty a drip pan underneath the appliance every day and get an ice delivery about once a week.  While this may sound archaic to our younger readers who grew up with an ice maker in their refrigerator, for the latter, this was how it used to be.

We’ve come a long way, baby, with refrigeration, freezers, ice makers, and wine bars since then.  Ice makers, for the most part, are standard in the vast majority of refrigerator/freezer combos.  Today, we can enjoy features like this on the KitchenAid Architect II Series Side by Side Refrigerator:

  • AquaSense™ In-Door-Ice® ice dispensing system has an ice bucket located in the door to increase freezer capacity
  • Automatic ice maker ensures a constant supply of ice on hand at all times
  • FreshChill™ Temperature Management System
  • AquaSense™ Base-Grille Filtration System – filtered by PuR® – reduces water impurities and saves storage space
  • Advanced Electronic Through-the Door Ice & Water Dispenser
  • On demand pulsed defrost system helps preserve the taste of frozen foods by minimizing temperature swings

Home-Tech, Service That Works!

Appliance Advice 101 – Laundry Room

At Home-Tech, we don’t just fix and sell new appliances, we also give you advice on how to make them last longer. We’ve been compiling our most Frequently Asked Questions about laundry appliances.  Our Appliance technicians out in the field and our Appliance specialists in our showrooms provided you with the following laundry-related questions and answers.

Whirlpool Appliance Laundry Front Loading

Whirlpool Duet

Is it OK to use bleach in a High Efficiency (HE) front loading washing machine?

Yes, not only is it OK to use bleach in your HE clothes washer, it is really important to do so! Any water left behind inside the works of a HE appliance can be a breeding ground for bacteria that may transfer to subsequent loads. We hear a lot of complaints from front-loading HE clothes washer owners trying to figure out why their machines have a bad odor, and bacteria growth is usually the culprit.  Regular bleach usage prevents bacteria growth and keeps a HE appliance smelling fresh.

How can I be more energy efficient when doing laundry?

Our friends from Whirlpool provided us with the following gems of wisdom:

Washing Machine Efficiency Tips

  • Wash full loads, but don’t overload the machine.  Washing full loads can save 3,400 gallons of water annually.
  • Use cold water for rinsing.  Warm and hot water require more energy for heating.
  • Set water heaters to 120°F to achieve the most energy efficient temperature.  For each 1° reduction in water temperature, you can save between 3%-5% in energy costs±.

Dryer Efficiency Tips

  • Dry full loads, but don’t overload the dryer.  Air circulation is important to ensure proper drying.
  • Dry a few loads in succession to take advantage of leftover heat in the dryer.
  • Wash and dry similar fabric types together.  This ensures even drying and reduces the amount of time needed in the dryer.
  • Use moisture-sensing settings to avoid over drying, which wastes energy and can cause clothing to shrink.
  • Clean the dryer lint filter after each load to maintain proper air circulation and heating.
  • Keep the dryer’s outside exhaust clean.  A clogged exhaust lengthens drying time and increases energy use.

Is it true that more suds means cleaner laundry?

Appliance Laundry

HE Detergent for this Appliance

Excess suds actually hold onto soils and redeposit them on your laundry.  Try using a high-efficiency detergent with a front-loading washing machine like the Whirlpool Duet system.  This energy efficient appliance:

  • Uses up to 70 percent less energy and 70 percent less water as compared to a conventional top-load washing machine manufactured before 2004.
  • Is 62 percent more efficient than federal standards require.
  • Has a capacity load exceeding 3 cubic feet and uses only 5,286 gallons of water per year.
  • Spins at 1,200 revolutions per minute, ringing out more water than conventional washing machines, reducing drying time and energy use.

Do I really need to clean out the lint filter in my dryer?

Always clean the lint screen.  This increases energy efficiency, speeds up drying and reduces the risk of overheating associated with clogging.  If you clean it out, you may not  have to call Home-Tech for an appliance repair.

Appliance Advice When You Need It Most

Home-Tech’s appliance specialists are readily available to answer any of your appliance questions, even if it is about doing your laundry.  We’ve got you covered from information about getting wine stains out of your favorite shirt to how many pairs of jeans you can do in one load of wash.  Come into our showrooms or shop our online Appliance Store to learn more about the brands we carry and the many laundry options we can provide. Service Agreement – Man Arrested for Selling Fake Service Warranties in Port Charlotte

Is it too much to ask for ethical service with your Service Agreement or appliance warranty program?  Just this past Tuesday, we posted about the Today Show’s story on unethical air conditioning and appliance repairmen. The next day, a Home-Tech employee came across this story on NBC 2′s website: Man arrested for selling fake appliance warranties.  This is another prime example of a rip-off and scammer that reflects poorly on our industry.

This story is reposted from NBC-2.com:

A 36-year-old Punta Gorda air conditioner repairman was arrested on Tuesday for selling a fraudulent warranty to a Port Charlotte woman.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman on April 13th complaining about being scammed by Nathan Sasse.

The victim said she hired {OMITTED COMPANY NAME} to service her air conditioner in January. When she asked about renewing or extending her appliance warranty, Sasse told her he had a friend who could provide service warranties cheaper than Sears, and handed her a brochure with the company name, “Service and Security Excellence.”

Later that month, Sasse returned to the woman’s home and she provided him with a $400 check to purchase the SASE warranty.

A representative contacted the woman in February and told him that Sasse had been fired from the company for stealing from them and that the warranty she purchased from him was likely a scam.

On May 22nd, detectives with the CCSO Economic Crimes Unit contacted the Florida Division of Corporations on the status of SASE and were told it was a “rejected filing.”

The Charlotte County Tax Collector’s Office said they had no listing for SASE, and the Florida Department of Financial Services said home warranty sales are required to be licensed.

Sasse was arrested Tuesday on charges of grand theft and violating licensing requirements to sell home warranties.

If anyone has purchased a warranty from Sasse and his fake company, you’re asked to call CCSO at 941-639-2101.
