3 Tips to Keep Your Air Conditioner Hurricane Safe

hurricane safeLike it or not, it’s officially Hurricane Season in Southwest Florida – and all we can do is keep our fingers crossed that we don’t end up in the proverbial Cone of Uncertainty. Home-Tech is here to help you keep your air conditioner hurricane safe should the worst happen.

Hurricane Safe – Stay Away Jim and Anderson!

If you’ve lived in the area for awhile, you’re prepared for the storm watches and the close calls, but if Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel shows up to broadcast live from our beaches in a rain pancho, we’ll know we’re in trouble. Worse yet, if Anderson Cooper arrives wearing galoshes and has a camera man in tow, then it’s DEFINITELY time to head for higher ground.

Power Woes

During Hurricane Charley, back in 2004, there was plenty to contend with, but probably the most challenging part of the aftermath was lack of power. And to make it all the more worse, it was August – the steamiest month of the year. The heat and humidity sent many of us to bars, where there was air-conditioning, ice, and relief from the relentless stickiness. And pretzels – bars also have pretzels.

Keep Your Air Conditioner Hurricane Safehurricane safe

But for many unlucky homeowners, even when the power came back, they were still suffering in sweaty weather because their outdoor air conditioners had gone the way of Dorothy’s house in “The Wizard of Oz” – indeed, when you’re faced  with a category 4 hurricane that carries winds as high as 150 mph, your outdoor unit is at risk if it’s not tied down with hurricane strapping. The good news is that when Home-Tech installs your air conditioner, hurricane straps are part of our installation process, so it’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about when your eyes are glued to the weather radar and you’re filling up endless jugs of water.

3 Tips to Protect Your Air Conditioning Unit

Besides strapping, here are some recommendations from FEMA about how to prepare your air conditioning system before the storm hits:

  1. Turn off your air conditioner.
  2. If you have a window AC unit or portable air conditioner with discharge ducts that exhaust through a window or to the exterior, remove the unit/ducts and seal the opening.
  3. Cover any outdoor air conditioners or condensing units with a tarp or plywood to protect the air conditioner from flying debris.

hurricane safeHopefully, your refrigerator, washer, and various other appliances won’t be sucked up into the swirling vortex of a hurricane (seeing an oven fly by your window would be jarring, at best). But, if you purchase one of our air conditioning systems, we’ll make sure it’s secure. Home-Tech Service Agreement customers always get scheduled first for service when something goes wrong. So hurricane season may be a good season to think about getting coverage.

A Summer of Sunny Skies

Meanwhile, let’s hope for a relaxing, hurricane-free summer, where we’ll all be able to breathe a sigh of relief when storm season is over on November 1st — happy in the knowledge that Jim Cantore or Anderson Cooper did NOT arrive on our sunny, calm shores.

Valuable AC Maintenance

ac101Part of the value of having a GOLD Service Agreement with Home-Tech is that one annual air conditioning maintenance and clean and check is included at NO CHARGE. Our expert technicians are a valuable resource when it comes to your ac maintenance. If you haven’t scheduled your clean and check yet this spring, call Home-Tech today to make your appointment.

Very Valuable to Seasonal Clients

To Whom It May Concern,

We scheduled a maintenance appointment for our two air conditioning units on Friday between 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. The service was great…..call received regarding the time frame a technician would arrive and Chet appeared within that time frame. He was very polite and professional; serviced both units and cleaned all return filters.

Your service is so valuable to us as seasonal clients. When an issue arrives we have always had immediate service. We sincerely thank you.

Sincerely,

R. Marcon, Naples, Florida

Extremely Careful with Our House

To Whom It May Concern:
This is to say that Dan did a commendable job servicing our two AC’s. Dan was very personable, very professional, and extremely careful with our house environment. I appreciated his work ethics and thorough check which resulted in finding a crucial problem with a valve that would have led to major problem if gone undetected. He timely took care of ordering the part and in two days the part will be installed so that we are back with proper air conditioning.
Home-Tech should be proud to have Dan as one of their service people carry the banner of Home-Tech.
Sincerely.

A Wonderful Job

Good morning.

Joe just left our home about ½ hour ago after performing our semi-annual AC system clean and check and I wanted to let you know that he did a wonderful job, was professional, and even “up-sold” me into purchasing a UV anti-bacterial device/system for our AC system. Thank you for having such fine people working with Home Tech. It is one of the main reasons why we have remained faithful customers for over 20+ years – first in Naples and now in Bonita Springs.

Thanks!

M. Norbeck, Bonita Springs, FL

May Day! May Day! My Air Conditioner is on the Fritz!

air conditioning may dayMay has officially arrived and in Southwest Florida, that basically means the beginning of seven long months of heat and humidity. In other parts of the country, they’re happily waving goodbye to one of the most brutal winters ever, as they joyously open their windows and doors to allow a lovely spring breeze into their homes. But here, we’re doing just the opposite. We’re closing everything up and cranking our thermostats down (as I pen this missive, it’s 91 degrees and 60 percent humidity – and it’s only May 1st). But, what if, just what if, it stopped working?

Scary Summer

We all have fears – but if you’re like me, one of the most terrifying things imaginable is having your A/C die. A good, working, cold air conditioner is key to survival in our tropical climate. Some say they’re “fine” with opening windows and running ceiling fans, but I’d rather pay for air-conditioning than just about anything. I’m happy to give up a new pair of shoes or a handbag if it means keeping my thermostat at 70 degrees at night. And any woman who has ever experienced a hot flash KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.

Home-Tech to the Rescue!

Last summer, my fear came to pass. Our A/C was not pushing out cold air – and it was August. It was also a Sunday evening (of COURSE). My first thought was to check into a hotel, but then I remembered Home-Tech. The Tech Rep was there lickety-split – and luckily it was an easy fix – he replaced some fluids and the A/C was doing its thing again before I was nearly forced to dunk my head in a sink full of ice water.

First Call’s On Us

Home-Tech is your May Day call on May Day or ANY day if your air-conditioner – or any appliance – needs a fix. And remember, the First Call’s On Us! That means Home-Tech will cover your first repair up to $200 when you purchase a Gold Service Agreement – taking the anxiety out of a long, hot summer is SO worth it. Personally, I’ll never forget the technician who saved my life with a May Day call last year – and my husband is grateful, too – menopausal women in non-air conditioned environments should be approached with caution. Trust me.

Air Conditioning Installation – What, Which, Who

air conditioning repair ductDid you know that in Southwest Florida most ac systems only last between 8 and 14 years?  Isn’t that surprising? It’s because of the conditions here in SW Florida and how often our air conditioning systems run to keep us cool. If your system is reaching the end of its lifetime you might be thinking it’s time to start considering an air conditioning installation.  And once you make that decision to replace, you have three more equally important decisions. At Home Tech we call these decisions WHAT, WHICH and WHO.

Decision 1 – WHAT – What Type of System?

You may be thinking . . . I’ll just replace the old system with the same type of system. But with all the technological advancements and improvements made in indoor comfort systems you will find that taking just a little time to choose the right type of new system that perfectly matches your lifestyle and comfort needs will give your home years of feeling just right and considerable savings.

In choosing which type the considerations are:

  • Straight cool system or
  • Heat pump

heat stripIn Southwest Florida we have few days that require heat so many systems are straight cool; meaning the heating source is a simple very inexpensive heat strip, kind of like a toaster in your air handling unit. The problem is it is very expensive to operate. So when we do have a cooler winter your electric bills will skyrocket.

The alternative is the heat pump. The heat pump actually reverses itself when indoor heat is needed and this type of heating is produced at one third the cost of the toaster. Home-Tech recommends the heat pump system because its efficiency is complete in both cooling and heating while the difference in installation cost is minimal. Both straight cool and heat pump systems are available in various efficiency and costs. The smart homeowner makes his efficiency decision by dividing the annual energy savings by the cost of the installation to find his best return on investment.

Decision 2 – WHICH – Which Brand of System?air conditioning installation Maytag

There are many brands of equipment on the market. So which one do you choose? Home-Tech has been servicing and installing air conditioning systems in Southwest Florida since 1981 and in our opinion two brands have consistently been the most reliable, cost efficient and cutting edge: Trane and Carrier. However in recent years the Maytag brand by Nordyne is also becoming a real contender with their 25 SEER iQ drive systems.

Decision 3 – WHO – Who Do You Choose to Install Your System?

Who you select to install your new home comfort system is the most important decision that you will make. The contractor must be licensed, hold the required insurances, and have a proven track record of professionalism, reliability, trustworthiness and success. The sophistication of today’s equipment will only function to its full capacity if it’s installed properly. This requires skilled installers and technicians that are rarely found with the lowest bid. Like the old saying goes:

“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

air conditioning installersHome-Tech has serviced millions of air conditioning systems and installed tens of thousands of home comfort systems. Our employee owned installers and technicians are the best in the business and we have the history to prove it.

So what type of system –  straight cool or heat pump? Which brand of system? They are not all the same. And most important who to install the system. Employee owned Home-Tech of course. We have the passion, skill, history and experience to install your brand new indoor comfort system.

Prompt, Polite and EfficientHome-Tech Air conditioning repair

We just had the good fortune of having your service rep Joe service our central air conditioner. Joe took the time to explain to this novice (me) exactly how the system worked, what he was doing and how to set it up for optimum performance once we head north for the summer. He was prompt, polite and efficient. You can be proud of him as a representative of your company.

Home-Tech,

Today your representative, Chet, came to our home to conduct the annual cleaning & maintenance for our two A/C systems.  Based on our past experience, we have found every one of your people to be exceptionally good representatives of your Company.  However, today our experience with Chet established a new “benchmark” that others will have difficulty meeting in the future!

Chet arrived on time and with a pleasant greeting when he introduced himself.  He was well dressed and spoke well.  Throughout the process of cleaning and servicing our A/C system he was careful to put down a sheet to catch any falling dust and dirt and even used a dust rag before opening the hatch in the ceiling of my wife’s closet to make certain that no dirt fell on her clothes.  He kept us informed of his progress and answered all of our questions directly and intelligently.

You are most fortunate to have Chet as a member of the Home-Tech Team!
