Dishwasher Rebates from Home-Tech May 2015

DishwasherRebatesIf you’re a fan of the popular TV series “Mad Men”, you probably noticed that in the final episode of the series this past Sunday night, there was a scene that captured one of the main characters, 15-year old Sally Draper, standing at the kitchen sink, painstakingly doing the dishes. Keep in mind, the show was set in 1970 – before it was commonplace for homes to come with built-in dishwashers. It seems that there is actually a day dedicated to this chore – “Do Dirty Dishes Day” – okay, but not without an automatic dishwasher from Home-Tech.

Those Were (Not) The Days

If you’re over the age of 50 or so, you can certainly recall having to stand on a step stool in order to reach the sink, filling it with sudsy water, and scrubbing each individual glass, plate, pot, pan, fork, knife, and spoon – usually with a brother or sister on rinsing and towel drying duty, while a taller family member put all the dishes away. I don’t think any of us considered doing dishes a favorite chore. Especially when the water started to cool down, the suds dissipated, and bits of food rose to the surface (gross). All those kids in a dish-duty assembly line may have looked like a happy team, but trust me – they were not. It was just the last chore before we got to sit down in front of the TV. To say some of us may have rushed through the job to be able to turn on “The Carol Burnett Show” is putting it mildly. And inevitably, there was that one pot that still had a bit of burnt spaghetti sauce left on the bottom that would have to soak for several days. The only good news about washing dishes, was that allegedly, according to the ad pros on Madison Avenue, Palmolive dish soap would make your hands softer (“You’re soaking in it!) – yeah, right.

Welcome To The Dishwashers of The MillenniumWhirlpool gold dishwasher

Thankfully, dishwater hands, kids’ dish assembly lines, and sinks full of soaking pots and pans, ended later in the 70’s when dishwashers became more common, not just in wealthy homes, but in almost all homes. And these days, Home-Tech offers state-of-the-art millennium style dishwashers that are not only practically silent, but almost invisible, as they integrate smoothly into the rest of your kitchen. And best of all, we have dishwasher rebates to offer!

Wonderful Whirlpool

We love Whirlpool, and we’re currently offering a rebate on their Compact Tall Tub Dishwasher (model #WDF518SAAB) in black, white, or monochromatic stainless steel. It’s perfect if you have space issues in your kitchen, yet want an appliance that does a big job. Plus, it boasts the Quiet Partner Sound 1 package – between its convenient size and barely-there noise level, this dishwasher never disappoints.

Gee, G.E., You’re Great

We’re also offering a rebate on our G.E. 18” Spacemaker Built-In Dishwasher (Model # GSM1800FBB) in black or white, with strong racks designed for your biggest and dirtiest dish loads. The full-length flat door looks great with your existing cabinetry and adds elegance.

SP32-20150520-140450The Beauty of Bosch

The rebates continue with the innovative Bosch 24” Recessed Handle Special Application Dishwasher in sleek black (model # SGE63E06UC). With four wash cycles, a sanitizing option, and the distinction of being the quietest dishwasher in its class, this appliance will not only make life easier – it will make your kitchen more beautiful.

There are plenty of reasons to be nostalgic about the 70’s – Donny Osmond, Earth Shoes, and of course, “The Carol Burnett Show” – but washing dishes was never one of them – softer hands or not.

Appliance Cleaning 101

Appliance Cleaning 101Happy first day of Spring! It’s officially Spring in Southwest Florida and since most of us shudder at the phrase “spring cleaning”, we at Home-Tech have decided to go with spring sparkling instead! It’s time to make those beautiful appliances of yours sparkle – not just on the outside, but on the inside, too. While students get to be out of school and on spring break (by the way, why don’t adults get a spring break? It should be mandatory!), it’s time for us to open our notebooks and get to class for Appliance Cleaning 101. Maybe you don’t feel like cleaning your appliances because they are so old and broken down. If that’s the case stop by one of our showrooms and pick out some new shiny, sparkling ones.

Delving into the Dishwasher

First, run an empty cycle with white vinegar in the detergent cup to wipe out lime deposits. Next, do the same with powdered lemonade – the citrus agents help get rid of stains. Use a small vacuum attachment to clean the dust out of fan slats.

Meticulous Microwave

Fill a coffee mug with water and fresh lemon slices – put it in the center of the microwave on high for three minutes; wait another three minutes. The steam from the lemon water will not only cut odors, but also loosen grime for easy cleaning. A handy way to clean the turntable wheels is with an old toothbrush.

bad smell in refrigeratorResplendent Refrigerator

Wipe down the inner walls with vanilla extract on a paper towel – a simple and easy way to eliminate odors. Make sure you take out all removable shelves and drawers for a good soak in warm soapy water. Use a vacuum attachment to clean the coils behind the fridge where pet hair and dust accumulate. A great way to clean underneath is with a yardstick – just attach some duct tape to the end and swipe back and forth –- not only will it pick up the dirt – you might just find that earring that you lost last year.

Wonderful Washer

The best way to keep your washer clean and running properly is to not use too much detergent.  Home-Tech recommends you use HE detergent and only half as much as the detergent companies suggest.  If you have a front load washer, we recommend you wipe down the seal around the door with bleach occasionally to help discourage the growth of mold.  Both washers and dishwashers can use a good cleaning with Affresh or Washer Magic.  We sell it in our showrooms.

Delightful Dryerwasher cleaner

Your dryer needs TLC especially around the vent area.  Be sure to keep your lint trap clean and have your ventilation system professionally cleaned to prevent a build up of lint.  It’s a true fire hazard.

Clean Air

Now that our air conditioners will likely start running full-time for the next several, warm, humid months — call Home-Tech for a thorough inspection and clean and check. When you purchase a Gold Member Service Agreement – this service is included.

Sparkle this Spring with Home-Tech!

The Bachelor and His Refrigerator

bachelor freezerThe three-hour season finale of the “The Bachelor” was last night with two ladies remaining, vying for the indecisive heart of Venezuelan hunk, Juan Pablo Galavis. Which lady did you root for? Someday maybe he will marry and have his life change forever – and that includes his refrigerator.

A Bachelor’s Appliances Could Be As Lonely as He Is

Whether it’s a bachelor friend, a son or brother on his own, or a dude that rooms with other dudes – guys’ refrigerators can often be barren wastelands. Some are filled with only a plethora of condiments for all the take-out they consume; others boast beer, beer, and MORE beer; still others are filled with bottled water (to take on runs and work-outs) and half-eaten pizzas (to eat cold for breakfast). Oh, how we hope that Juan Pablo’s woman will fill his soul AND his refrigerator.

Use it Or Lose Itbachelor refrigerator

At Home-Tech, we know that if you’re living like a bachelor, you’re probably using your appliances sparingly. A single guy (or gal) might use the microwave often, but the stove doesn’t get the same kind of attention. Instead of giving it a rose and sending it on its way, it’s important to turn it on once or twice a month to keep it in running order. Same as your dishwasher; hopefully you’re recycling all those paper plates and red solo cups, but it’s necessary to keep your dishwasher healthy and lubricated by running it now and then.

Revving Things Up

Seasonal residents wonder why their appliances break down when they’re very sparingly using them (because they are hardly here). Not often using them can be a part of the problem. If you have friends or neighbors checking on your Florida home while you’re up north during the summer, it’s not a bad idea to have them rev up your appliances.

You Don’t Have to Go It Alone When You Have Home-Tech

We are here for you every day of the week if any of your appliances stand you up. Home-Tech considers refrigerator repair an emergency. We don’t want you to lose your fridge contents if it stops cooling. So give us a call for service. We won’t show up in a limo, but we will arrive as soon as possible to do your refrigerator repair.

Thanksgiving Count Down – Get Appliances Ready

turkeyThanksgiving is FAST approaching.  We know it’s a busy time of the year for you.  Perhaps family is coming in from across the country.  And if you are hosting the Thanksgiving meal there is much prep to do.  Home-Tech wants you to be able to enjoy your holiday and not have additional stresses so we’ve put together this count down to help get your kitchen appliances ready for the big day.

Clean your oven now.  If you have a self cleaning oven do not wait until a day or two before Thanksgiving to use the feature. Do not use the self cleaning cycle on or before a big holiday like Thanksgiving.  The oven could overheat and damage a key component such as a fuse or even the control board.   Ovens can get stuck in self clean mode or have any number of problems.  Wait until after your meal is prepared to clean the oven.  Also check your burners to be sure that everything is working properly.

Electrolux perfect turkey buttonDo not wait until you’re ready to put the turkey in the oven to check your oven temperatures and working condition.  Use your oven a couple of times in the weeks leading up to the big day to rule out any irregularities in temperature or uneven cooking. After your oven has pre-heated, let it preheat for another 5 minutes or so.  This will allow time for the inside walls to heat which will help keep the heat inside the oven nice and even. If the oven temperature is off, the most common cause is a bad oven sensor or maybe a bake or broil element.  It’s best to call for service if this occurs.  If you do need a repair, call us now to avoid the rush.  We can have a technician come out right away to take care of it.

Service Agreement TechniciansIf your disposal is over seven years old, it might be time to replace it.  Contact Home-Tech to discuss the possibility of installing a new one.  The money saved in plugged drain bills could be well worth it.

Having your garbage disposal in working order is a must for Thanksgiving! Make sure you’ve got a good water flow before you turn on the disposal, keep it going during the grinding and let if flow for a few seconds after you turn off the disposal to make sure everything is flushed from the disposal and the drain line. Do not put liquid fat down the disposal.  It can dry in the drain line and the disposal and cause your disposal to clog up. Try to use a disposal cleaner occasionally to eliminate any grease that does accumulate.  Otherwise you might get an unpleasant odor coming from the disposal.  Make sure the product you are using is authorized by the disposal manufacturer.

It’s nice to grind up peels from citrus fruits like lemons or oranges.  This will help keep the grinding area smelling fresh and the natural acidity helps suppress the bacterial growth associated with the odors. The garbage disposal is one of the items that we are called to service the most during the holidays.  You might want to consider having your kitchen drain line snaked every two years or so as preventative maintenance.

3refrigerator full appliances Home Tech

Clean out your refrigerator and freezer.  Thanksgiving is the one time of year when your fridge is packed with delicious foods.  You need every square inch of space for all of those side dishes and that huge turkey. Keep you refrigerator at least two or three inches away from the wall to give it enough breathing room to perform properly. Don’t panic if it doesn’t feel as cold as usual during the holidays.  You probably have more in the refrigerator with all the extra meal ingredients and leftover.  It may take up to 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize from the door being open more frequently. Check and care for the rubber seals (or gaskets) surrounding the inside of your fridge by using a mild soap twice a year to prevent cracked and torn seals.  You can test the seals by placing a dollar bill halfway inside the door.  If the dollar pulls out easily, you might be losing cold air from the refrigerator and you might want to have it checked out. Dusting off the coil under your refrigerator will keep it running well.  Use a soft broom or brush.

maytag dishwasher racksIf your dishwasher is not getting your dishes clean, it might be time for one of our technicians to take a look at it.  After all, you want your dishes and glassware to look spotless on your Thanksgiving table.  And, if your dishwasher is an older model and really noisy when it runs you might want to shop our appliance showroom and pick up a newer quiet model like one from Bosch (and there is a $200 rebate now).

Always run the disposal before starting the dishwasher.  The dishwasher usually drains into the disposal and if there’s debris in the disposal you could have the contents of the disposal back up into the sink or you could have a clog. Run a bit of hot water in your sink before running the dishwasher.  This gets the hot water flowing so that when the dishwasher comes on, it has immediate hot water which will help in cleaning and sterilizing your dishes.  Set the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees. Water that is cooler than this won’t do a good job cleaning.  And water that is hotter could scald you.

Running a full load on Thanksgiving is no problem usually but don’t pack the dishes too tightly. Dishwashers clean dishes by spraying water over them so the water needs to be able to flow through the dishes to clean them. Don’t pre-rinse too much.  Today’s dishwashers and detergent have improved greatly.  If you haven’t tried putting your dishes in dirty lately, you might want to try again.  You might be pleasantly surprised.

When One Goes, They All Go. A Customer’s Story of Appliance Repair.

Repair DryerFeatured“I just had a visit from Home-Tech. I called over the weekend about a service call for our dishwasher, as it seemed to be foaming up in great amounts, and then, wouldn’t clear through the cycle. Home-Tech scheduled the appliance repair for early in the week. Not more than a couple of hours later, our microwave blew out. We called Home-Tech, and they were able to add the microwave to the service call.

When the technician arrived, he checked out the dishwasher first. His first recommendation on this appliance repair was to use a dishwasher cleaner, and double check the age of the dishwasher soap being used. In addition, he told us fresher soap won’t foam, but older dishwasher soap has a tendency to foam. That was excellent advice!

The Home-Tech appliance repair technician then checked our microwave, and it was, in fact dead. A new microwave was needed, so the technician called Home-Tech, and ordered us a brand new one right then. He even scheduled the installation appointment for us!

hometech appliance installation eduardNot more than a day later, Eduardo came out to perform the appliance installation. He worked quickly and efficiently. As a service agreement member, and being that our microwave was more than 10 years old, we did not qualify for the free replacement. But, we did get a substantial price break on a pro-rated basis. We are extremely happy customers and were pleased not only with the appliance repair, but with the entire experience, as always.

Selecting Appliances with Style from Home Designer, Keffie Lancaster

Appliances keffie lancasterHome-Tech has wonderful professional relationships with many interior designers, architects and contractors in Southwest Florida.  Many of our customers are  likely to purchase appliances by the recommendation of their designer, contractor or the brands their friends and neighbors are recommended. Therefore,  we are pleased to introduce one of our very good friends, Keffie Lancaster, Associate ASID of Lancaster Interior Design in Sarasota. Keffie’s specialities include interior/exterior design, remodeling advice, window treatments, special event decor, staging, custom painting and faux finishings.

What are you seeing as the current trends in kitchen design?

Functional spaces and lots of room for friends and family! No matter the size of your home, guests always end up in the kitchen. I have noticed a shift lately, and I am designing less muli-level eating areas with bar stools and bar areas. The trend now is to create more room to work in the kitchen.  Many people have less square footage allocated to formal living spaces and choose to utilize their kitchen to display china and collectibles in glass cabinets.  Lighting and cabinetry made from reclaimed and recycled materials is also very high in demand.

What appliances, from your customers, seem to be in the most demand?

Energy-saving appliances, stainless steel appliances, and sleek designs.

Are you seeing more or less stainless steel?

I think stainless steel will always be in demand.  It goes with all styles of cabinets, matches many flooring types and is very timeless.  Second to stainless would have to be black.  I did hear a rumor that colored appliances are making a comeback, however!

Have you had any requests for redoing a laundry room?

Yes all the time!  Laundry rooms are more multi-functional than they used to be.  Families tend to need lots of work space in the laundry room.  A nice flat surface for folding, bins for organizing, and hanging space for drying clothes are all becoming important design elements. I always like to paint bright colors or hang a fun paper on the walls in the laundry room.  Let’s face it, no one wants to be in there.  Anything you can do to make it enjoyable could and should be done!

What advice can you give to a person trying to redo their kitchen on a budget?

We all have a number in mind when we start a project.  Some are big and some are small, but you can stretch your budget to make it work.  Figure out what items you might be able to do yourself, make a list of priorities, and make a list of wants and needs. Let’s just say you recently had new cabinets and floor installed in your kitchen. A corner you can cut would be to reuse your counter tops and paint them yourself.

I always recommend accessing what will give you the best return on your investment.  New appliances and cabinets are great for resale and increase the value of your home. My favorite DIY, super budget-friendly kitchen re-do  is a fresh coat of paint on your cabinets, some new hardware and a great new wall color.

How do you feel about mixing and matching finishes?

I love the idea of mixing and matching finishes!  Too much of one finish can be overwhelming, especially in a very large kitchen.  I really like to have a contrasting finish and counter top on the island,  if there is one.  I also love glass front cabinets with colored backs to highlight glassware or collectables in the cabinet, or better yet mirrored backs, my ultimate favorite!

I also am partial to layered finishes with depth and multi-toned wood.  Zebra wood and exotics are always fun, if you can work them in the budget.

Do a lot of your customers have custom cabinetry on their appliances?

Not as much anymore because of the trend towards stainless steel appliances.  My personal preference is paneled fronts on doors of refrigerators and dishwashers whenever possible.
