Home-Tech Wants to See You in a Hammock

hammockdayThis summer, Home-Tech has been celebrating the good things in life that make these long, hot days not just bearable – but, downright enjoyable. Whether it’s iced tea, homemade ice cream, the comfy cool of air conditioning, or the Fourth of July, we’ve been applauding it. So, how fabulous is it that this week, we get to observe National Hammock Day?

Heavenly Hammocks

Of course, there’s plenty of expensive, fancy, designer outdoor furniture to choose from – and there are lots of folks that spend more on their outdoor living area than their indoor one – and that’s just fine. But, it’s hard to think of a more relaxing way to spend an afternoon than lying in a good old-fashioned hammock in the shade. Mind you, actually getting into a hammock can be a struggle and unless you’ve perfected the art, it’s not exactly graceful. Sitting in the middle and then swinging your legs in tends to be an issue of balance and not all of us have that. Running and jumping in is never a wise idea — unless, perhaps, you’re under the age of 10 or you’re wearing a helmet and knee pads. In the end, practice makes perfect and mastering the art of relaxing doesn’t sound like a bad way to pass the time. Finally, once you get into your comfy hammock and you’re blissfully swaying in a gentle breeze with a good book, the LAST thing you want on your mind is a broken appliance or worse in the heat, a broken air conditioner. That’s why we recommend a Service Agreement with Home-Tech.

Relaxation, not Agitationservice agreements gold

A Service Agreement is all about your peace of mind, as we’d much rather see you napping in a hammock than fretting about a refrigerator on the fritz or an air conditioner not doing its job. Our Gold Service Agreement means one of each of all major appliances and your air conditioning system are covered through the year, plus all service calls are unlimited and free – even on weekends and holidays. Our Silver Service Agreement features many of the same advantages, such as an annual air-conditioning clean and check, plus complete parts and labor coverage, and you pay only a minimal service call fee.

AC Repair Home-TechSo, get to practicing your hammock grace and agility so you can chill out and let Home-Tech handle any appliance or air conditioning surprises – when it comes to those, we’ve got you covered.

Refrigerators with Bottom Freezers Perfect for Your Ice Cream

icecreamdayAh, the energy and impatience of youth — those were the two main ingredients that went into making homemade ice cream back in the day. And since National Ice Cream Day fell on the calendar this past Sunday (we here it Home-Tech actually prefer to celebrate the holiday all month long — oh, never mind, let’s be honest — all YEAR long), let’s look back on the days of homemade ice cream and let’s look into the perfect storage for your ice cream – refrigerators with bottom freezers.

Grandma’s Ice Cream Was The Best

Sure, you could buy ice cream at the store, but there was nothing like the rich, smooth, sweet, fresh taste of homemade — and usually, it was Grandma’s recipe, which meant eggs, sugar, vanilla, fresh cream, and the best, most important ingredient of all — Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk. If you were lucky, your Grandma let you lick the inside top of the can (so good!). Next came the hard part, which meant dealing with with the ice, the rock salt, and that incredibly heavy wooden and cast iron contraption known as an Ice Cream Maker. And that’s when the adults kicked back with a cold glass of sweet tea and put the kids to work cranking.

Building Muscles and Appetitesbottom freezers

For folks 40-ish and older, childhood just wasn’t childhood unless you did your time cranking the ice cream maker — and you had to keep cranking, fast and constantly, to churn the ingredients. If you got lazy and stopped, you’d just end up with really thick cream instead of the fluffy, delicious, and most importantly, cold, ice cream you craved on a hot July day.

bottom freezerFreezing Your Sweet Creation

While things seemed better way back then, let’s remember that everything was also smaller, including freezers, so there wasn’t much room to fit ice, frozen meat, other staples, plus a carton of homemade ice cream — so you had to either eat it quick, or your Grandma had to do some creative freezer puzzle work. Something that HAS gotten better since childhood is freezers — and Home-Tech carries a variety that not only will fit your budget, but all the ice cream you want — homemade or store bought. One of the most popular models these days is the bottom drawer freezer and Home-Tech boasts proven, quality brands from manufacturers like Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag, and more — and plenty of these Refrigerators with Bottom Freezers feature money-savings rebates. Just stop into one of our sparkling showrooms in Bradenton or Fort Myers.

Here’s the Recipe

And now that you’re in the mood for ice cream, check out this super easy recipe (no ice cream maker required — you already did your time at the crank):

1/2 cup of cold milk
1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
1 (14 oz.) can of sweetened condensed milk
1/8 teaspoon of salt
1 pint of heavy cream

In a medium bowl, stir together cold milk, vanilla, condensed milk, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat heavy cream with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Fold milk mixture into whipped cream.

Pour into shallow 2 quart dish, cover and freeze for 4 hours, stirring once after 2 hours or when edges start to harden. Serve or store in an airtight container for up to 10 days. Yields 12 tasty servings.

3 Tips to Keep Your Air Conditioner Hurricane Safe

hurricane safeLike it or not, it’s officially Hurricane Season in Southwest Florida – and all we can do is keep our fingers crossed that we don’t end up in the proverbial Cone of Uncertainty. Home-Tech is here to help you keep your air conditioner hurricane safe should the worst happen.

Hurricane Safe – Stay Away Jim and Anderson!

If you’ve lived in the area for awhile, you’re prepared for the storm watches and the close calls, but if Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel shows up to broadcast live from our beaches in a rain pancho, we’ll know we’re in trouble. Worse yet, if Anderson Cooper arrives wearing galoshes and has a camera man in tow, then it’s DEFINITELY time to head for higher ground.

Power Woes

During Hurricane Charley, back in 2004, there was plenty to contend with, but probably the most challenging part of the aftermath was lack of power. And to make it all the more worse, it was August – the steamiest month of the year. The heat and humidity sent many of us to bars, where there was air-conditioning, ice, and relief from the relentless stickiness. And pretzels – bars also have pretzels.

Keep Your Air Conditioner Hurricane Safehurricane safe

But for many unlucky homeowners, even when the power came back, they were still suffering in sweaty weather because their outdoor air conditioners had gone the way of Dorothy’s house in “The Wizard of Oz” – indeed, when you’re faced  with a category 4 hurricane that carries winds as high as 150 mph, your outdoor unit is at risk if it’s not tied down with hurricane strapping. The good news is that when Home-Tech installs your air conditioner, hurricane straps are part of our installation process, so it’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about when your eyes are glued to the weather radar and you’re filling up endless jugs of water.

3 Tips to Protect Your Air Conditioning Unit

Besides strapping, here are some recommendations from FEMA about how to prepare your air conditioning system before the storm hits:

  1. Turn off your air conditioner.
  2. If you have a window AC unit or portable air conditioner with discharge ducts that exhaust through a window or to the exterior, remove the unit/ducts and seal the opening.
  3. Cover any outdoor air conditioners or condensing units with a tarp or plywood to protect the air conditioner from flying debris.

hurricane safeHopefully, your refrigerator, washer, and various other appliances won’t be sucked up into the swirling vortex of a hurricane (seeing an oven fly by your window would be jarring, at best). But, if you purchase one of our air conditioning systems, we’ll make sure it’s secure. Home-Tech Service Agreement customers always get scheduled first for service when something goes wrong. So hurricane season may be a good season to think about getting coverage.

A Summer of Sunny Skies

Meanwhile, let’s hope for a relaxing, hurricane-free summer, where we’ll all be able to breathe a sigh of relief when storm season is over on November 1st — happy in the knowledge that Jim Cantore or Anderson Cooper did NOT arrive on our sunny, calm shores.

Father’s Day – Give Dad What He Really Wants

Happy Father's Day

With Father’s Day coming up this weekend we thought we would share a unique gift idea for your Dad – a Home-Tech Service Agreement, so he doesn’t have to make repairs anymore.

Poor Dad, or poor hubby (whichever the case may be) — a new survey conducted by the Daily Mail says that over 70% of people rely on their Dad’s to fix things until they’re at least 41-years old.

No kidding.

Offspring are calling their fathers to pop on over at all hours to handle a variety of home emergencies.

Included in the Top Ten Dad Duties Are…

  • Repairing the air-conditioning and/or heat.
  • Fixing a sink.
  • Replacing fuses or light bulbs in appliances.
  • Installing a kitchen.

Children in your 40s, it’s time not only for YOU to get a Service Agreement from Home-Tech, it’s time for you to get one for your Dad too — and it’s the perfect Father’s Day gift.

Dad Deserves a BreakDad fishing

Let’s face it, Dad has tons of socks, plenty of aftershave, and if he needs a new putter, he’ll go buy one himself. What he really wants is rest, relaxation, and peace of mind. That means not driving over to the kids’ house to diagnose and repair appliances. And better yet, not having to worry about those emergencies in his own home either. You may picture Dad with a tool belt around his waist and his head behind the refrigerator, but trust us, Dad pictures himself on the golf course, on a boat, fishing or sitting in front of the TV with a cold beverage cheering on his favorite team. And that means the security of Service Agreement Membership from Home-Tech.

service agreements goldGo For the Gold — The Perfect Service Agreement for The Perfect Dad

Home-Tech offers a variety of options when it comes to Service Agreements and your Dad deserves the best — that means the gold treatment with the Gold Service Agreement, it includes:

  • Unlimited service calls with NO service call fee, deductible or co-pay
  • Parts and labor are included
  • Emergency service, 7 days a week, including Holidays (especially Father’s Day!)
  • An annual air conditioning Clean and Check service
  • Free replacement if not repairable (equipment under 10 years of age, excluding water heaters)
  • Special Member Discount Pricing on air conditioning systems and major appliances

The convenience of immediate and professional service is just a phone call away.

Meanwhile, you’re still allowed to call your Dad for his wisdom, advice, and to babysit grand kids (these are the duties they actually like). But, leave the repairs to Home-Tech — and have a fabulous Father’s Day!

The Best Microwave – Home-Tech Recommendations

best microwavesWhen it comes to investing in the best microwave, we decided to talk to the experts in Home-Tech’s Fort Myers sparkling appliance showroom. There was a time when owning a microwave was a major luxury and consumers had to save their pennies to be able to afford one. These days, you can walk into just about any grocery store or even pharmacy and pick one up in between the styrofoam beer coolers and box fans — but, are you getting one that’s going to break down after a few months? It may be a bargain, but it’s not what you bargained for.

Less Service Calls . . . More Reliability

The technicians at Home-Tech repair microwaves in SW Florida homes each and every day so they know which brands are the most reliable. The appliance store only provides the best microwave brands with all the bells and whistles and that last the longest.  The appliance sales reps at Home-Tech walked us around the showroom and gave us a tour of the best of the best when it comes to microwaves. Yes — there are some snazzy features you’ll love, but most importantly, these appliances are reliable and THAT’S what it’s all about.

Here are the top three BEST microwave recommendations from Home-Tech:

The G.E. Profile (model #PVM9179SFSS)best microwaves 2014

  1. This sleek, stainless steel Convection Over-The-Range Microwave Oven not only looks great, it’s a G.E., and according to our experts, that means less calls for service.
  2. There are two oven wire racks, which makes multi-tasking easy.
  3. Plus, it’s also a convection oven — two great appliances in one!

The Bosch 800 Series Convection Over-The-Range Microwave Oven (model #HMV8052U)

  1. Another quality manufacturer that the appliance store at Home-Tech loves is Bosch.
  2. With an automatic defrost function and a sensor that lets you know when your food is done, this microwave is one of the best, most trustworthy appliances on the market.

The Whirlpool Microwave Hood Combination (model #WMH76719CS)

  1. Another solid, reliable microwave that will keep you cooking, not calling for service.
  2. This one not only features sensor cooking, but it doubles as a steamer.

You can see these top three recommendations and many more quality top of the line microwaves at one of Home-Tech’s showrooms or at www.home-tech.us.  Check them out and you’ll be cooking in your dream microwave in no time!

Appliance Insurance – Beware the Middlemen

PrintEmployee owned Home-Tech has been repairing appliances and air conditioning for over 33 years and Service Agreements, the perfect hedge against expensive repair bills. We have seen a lot of “appliance insurance” products popping up recently from banks, insurance companies, home warranty companies and even utilities that offer a lot of “big talk” about taking care of your appliances and ac units when they break down. Well here’s the skinny on all of this.

Those companies are middlemen, desk jockeys that only want to collect their fee and pass your repair off to unknown subcontractors. They don’t directly take care of your repairs like Home-Tech does. They are NOT local companies and they are not employee owned.

Be Wary Of This

  • Is there any emergency, after hours service?
  • Is he in a marked vehicle?
  • Is he licensed, fully trained, background checked, and drug free?
  • When will he get there? Will it be days? Weeks?
  • Is he qualified to repair your equipment?
  • Will you have to pay a service call fee?
  • Will he have the necessary parts on his truck?
  • Is his work guaranteed in any way?

Let’s face it!  A bank, an insurance company, home warranty company or a utility company are not in the repair business. You are really rolling the dice when you go with one of these companies. So, beware the middleman. Learn how Home-Tech’s Service Agreement differs from what the middlemen offer.

Go Localappliance insurance

Go with the local favorite in SW Florida -employee owned Home-Tech. Thousands of customers have been pleased with our service and continue to renew their Service Agreements year after year. With over 90 trucks on the road every day you will see us over and over again out in your community making repairs.  Again and again you will hear about Home-Tech throughout SW Florida.

Very Valuable to Seasonal Clients

To Whom It May Concern,

We scheduled a maintenance appointment for our two air conditioning units on Friday between 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. The service was great…..call received regarding the time frame a technician would arrive and Chet appeared within that time frame. He was very polite and professional; serviced both units and cleaned all return filters.

Your service is so valuable to us as seasonal clients. When an issue arrives we have always had immediate service. We sincerely thank you.

Sincerely,

R. Marcon, Naples, Florida

Extremely Careful with Our House

To Whom It May Concern:
This is to say that Dan did a commendable job servicing our two AC’s. Dan was very personable, very professional, and extremely careful with our house environment. I appreciated his work ethics and thorough check which resulted in finding a crucial problem with a valve that would have led to major problem if gone undetected. He timely took care of ordering the part and in two days the part will be installed so that we are back with proper air conditioning.
Home-Tech should be proud to have Dan as one of their service people carry the banner of Home-Tech.
Sincerely.
Homeowners, B. Truax, Bonita Springs, FL

A Wonderful Job

Good morning.

Joe just left our home about ½ hour ago after performing our semi-annual AC system clean and check and I wanted to let you know that he did a wonderful job, was professional, and even “up-sold” me into purchasing a UV anti-bacterial device/system for our AC system. Thank you for having such fine people working with Home Tech. It is one of the main reasons why we have remained faithful customers for over 20+ years – first in Naples and now in Bonita Springs.

Thanks!

M. Norbeck, Bonita Springs, FL

Appliances Have Come A Long Way, Baby – Which Means Happier Moms!

vintage washerAs you order flowers, pick out the perfect card, and make brunch reservations for Mother’s Day, we here at Home-Tech are reflecting on how much easier moms have it in 2014 than back in yesteryear. Sure, we still work hard at keeping our homes in shape, raising kids, and maintaining a career – but, looking back at how primitive appliances once were, you’ve got to wonder how our grandmothers and great-grandmothers managed without anti-depressants or spa days.

Washing Woes

In 1940, grandma had to first fill her brand new state-of-the-art washing machine with water. She then had to feed each item of clothing, one by one, through a ringer – then she had to hand crank the clothes clean. You can still purchase a vintage washing machine for mom on some Internet sites, but unless you want to be disinherited, I suggest a diamond tennis bracelet instead.

Ice, Ice, BabyGE Kitchen

We’ve made leaps and bounds with refrigerators, too. In the 1920′s, our foremothers had to contend with ice boxes. An ice box didn’t mean little cubes for your Diet Coke or a freezer for your Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream. It meant a wooden box with a block of ice in it — period. And great-grandma had to hope for the best that the ice man would cometh on the regular. If not, there was no Febreeze back then to mask the smell of spoiled food.

Dish Pan Hands

As far as dishwashers went in the turn-of-the-century, moms had to first pump the water into a bucket and then transfer it into two tin tubs – one for washing and one for rinsing – but, first, she probably had to make her own soap. Even as fancy and easy as dishwashers are today, we suggest NOT letting mom touch a single dirty dish on Mother’s Day. Breakfast in bed on a tray with a rose and a mimosa is the recommended way to go – and by the time she decides to get up, the kitchen should sparkle.

Home-Tech has the best appliances by Maytag, G.E., Bosch, and more to choose from and to make mom’s life easier (a weekend at a resort is always a good idea, too). Happy Mother’s Day!
