Clean Off Your Desk – Less Paperwork with a Home-Tech Service Agreement

CleanYourDeskWell, it came and went – National Clean Off Your Desk Day – it was last week. And I don’t know about you, but I still haven’t cleaned off my desk. If you’ve lived in the area for awhile, you’re prepared for the storm watches and the close calls, but if Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel shows up to broadcast live from our beaches in a rain pancho, we’ll know we’re in trouble. Worse yet, if Anderson Cooper arrives wearing galoshes and has a camera man in tow, then it’s DEFINITELY time to head for higher ground.

During Hurricane Charley, back in 2004, there was plenty to contend with, but probably the most challenging part of the aftermath was lack of power. And to make it all the more worse, it was August – the steamiest month of the year. The heat and humidity sent many of us to bars, where there was air-conditioning, ice, and relief from the relentless stickiness. And pretzels – bars also have pretzels.

But for many unlucky homeowners, even when the power came back, they were still suffering in sweaty weather because their outdoor air conditioners had gone the way of Dorothy’s house in “The Wizard of Oz” – indeed, when you’re faced  with a category 4 hurricane that carries winds as high as 150 mph, your outdoor unit is at risk if it’s not tied down with hurricane strapping. 3 Tips to Protect Your Air Conditioning Unit

Besides strapping, here are some recommendations from FEMA about how to prepare your air conditioning system before the storm hits:

  1. Turn off your air conditioner.
  2. If you have a window AC unit or portable air conditioner with discharge ducts that exhaust through a window or to the exterior, remove the unit/ducts and seal the opening.
  3. Cover any outdoor air conditioners or condensing units with a tarp or plywood to protect the air conditioner from flying debris.

We have seen a lot of “appliance insurance” products popping up recently from banks, insurance companies, home warranty companies and even utilities that offer a lot of “big talk” about taking care of your appliances and ac units when they break down. Appliances Have Come A Long Way, Baby – Which Means Happier Moms!

vintage washerAs you order flowers, pick out the perfect card, and make brunch reservations for Mother’s Day, we here at Home-Tech are reflecting on how much easier moms have it in 2014 than back in yesteryear. Sure, we still work hard at keeping our homes in shape, raising kids, and maintaining a career – but, looking back at how primitive appliances once were, you’ve got to wonder how our grandmothers and great-grandmothers managed without anti-depressants or spa days.

Washing Woes

In 1940, grandma had to first fill her brand new state-of-the-art washing machine with water. She then had to feed each item of clothing, one by one, through a ringer – then she had to hand crank the clothes clean. You can still purchase a vintage washing machine for mom on some Internet sites, but unless you want to be disinherited, I suggest a diamond tennis bracelet instead.

Ice, Ice, BabyGE Kitchen

We’ve made leaps and bounds with refrigerators, too. In the 1920′s, our foremothers had to contend with ice boxes. An ice box didn’t mean little cubes for your Diet Coke or a freezer for your Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream. It meant a wooden box with a block of ice in it — period. And great-grandma had to hope for the best that the ice man would cometh on the regular. If not, there was no Febreeze back then to mask the smell of spoiled food.

Dish Pan Hands

As far as dishwashers went in the turn-of-the-century, moms had to first pump the water into a bucket and then transfer it into two tin tubs – one for washing and one for rinsing – but, first, she probably had to make her own soap. Even as fancy and easy as dishwashers are today, we suggest NOT letting mom touch a single dirty dish on Mother’s Day. Breakfast in bed on a tray with a rose and a mimosa is the recommended way to go – and by the time she decides to get up, the kitchen should sparkle.
