It is never easy when researching a major purchase, like an air conditioning system, to really know what you are getting.  While there are many options and brands to chose from, there are five systems that really stand out. Home-Tech’s air conditioning experts have done the research for you. You can trust our selections, as our criteria for selecting these AC systems are based upon price, performance, warranty and durability.

Amana 18 Seer Air Conditioning System – ASXC18

The ASXC18 is a popular selection because it is a best value when considering price and warranty coverage. This air conditioning unit provides high-efficiency, outstanding performance and quiet operation. In addition, it’s reliable operation and outstanding features add up to premium indoor comfort. Amana’s premium warranty protection includes a lifetime unit replacement limited warranty as well as a 10-year parts limited warranty.

Carrier Infinity 21 Central Air Conditioner – 24ANB1

Home-Tech’s air conditioning experts consider this Carrier to be the most technologically advanced and the highest performer in its class.  It is the “Corvette” of the bunch.  Not only was the Infinity 21 pinned as  the Most Efficient in 2012 by Energy Star, but it was also named by Consumer’s Digest as a Best Buy® winner. By far, this system does the best job removing humidity in the home thanks to the two-stage scroll compressor.

Sweating Air Conditioning Vents? Try Closing the Windows.

air conditioning on close doorCooler weather is upon us and we all feel the desire to open up the windows. Whether you live closer to the water on the beach or inland, one rule holds true: Turn OFF your air conditioning if you are going to open up the windows. People say “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” but a sweating air conditioner can cause warping and/or other unwanted water damage to the air conditioning unit, its installation and the overall performance of the unit.

Technical Talk

Air conditioning is designed to operate as a closed loop. If you have the windows open, you are drawing in humid, warm outside air. This forces your AC unit to “condition” that air as well. If you close the windows, the AC unit recirculates the air in the house, removing moisture and cooling much more efficiently.  Negative pressure can also be the culprit here. Hot or warm, humid air can seep in from open windows or cracked sliding doors. This extra air coming in will make it difficult for your air conditioner to keep up, it will bog down your system, and increase your energy bills.

The Repeat Offenders

1. The Vacationer: You and your family are on vacation by the beach. The sounds of crashing waves are what you desire, but you also want the cool, dry feeling of air conditioning. You CAN have both, but it requires a Bose sound machine, put on the crashing waves setting. Here is the reality of the situation, it is BAD to keep the AC running with the windows open. The owner of the vacation home, or rental company will thank you for being respectful of their air conditioning.

2. The Prop-the-Door-Open Guy: Think propping the door open for a long period of time won’t effect your AC? Think again. You are effecting the balance of pressure in your home, which will effect the efficiency of your air conditioning system and the indoor air quality. Do you and your AC a favor. Ditch the prop, and just close the door. Your wallet will thank you for increasing the efficiency of your AC.

clogged filter air conditioning sweaty vents3.The Forgotten About Filter: Open windows aren’t the only causes of sweaty vent syndrome. Dirty coils or a clogged air filter can also do damage. Be proactive and check your air filter every month. If your air filter is clean and not clogged, and you suspect you have dirty coils, its time for Home-Tech to take over.

4. The Mis-Informed: Have you had an air conditioning technician come out and tell you that sweating air conditioning vents are normal? If so, this homeowner received bad information. Sweating AC vents are not desirable. Perhaps your air conditioning unit is located in a highly humid area or your air conditioning was not properly installed. Call a licensed air conditioning company, like Home-Tech, and have the professionals take a look at it.

Still Sweating Your Air Conditioning

If sweaty grills and vents are prevalent in your home, your energy bills are spiking and the efficiency of your air conditioning is lapsing.  It’s time to call Home-Tech and schedule a service call. The Balancing Act – Inside Professional Air Conditioning Installation

balanced air conditioning installationOne thing we rarely hear is “I would like for this room to be warmer than all the others in my home.” When people purchase a new air conditioning system from Home-Tech, they want even cooling and heating throughout their home. Have you ever wondered how we keep all the rooms in your home equally cool? Well, its a process called Air Balancing.

Air balancing is the process of testing and adjusting your air conditioning system to deliver the proper amount of air to each room in your home. Air balancing hoods are used to measure the the amount of air coming from each grille. A balanced air conditioning system runs more efficiently than an unbalanced system, which is why Home-Tech takes balancing your air flow very seriously, especially during your initial system installation.  We aim to provide an installation where the end results are rooms that are the same temperatures, with cleaner air, better humidity control and energy efficient.

A Home-Tech installer has the tools to address your home comfort issues.  We will offer solutions such as programmable thermostats, humidifiers, air cleaners and variable-speed and two-stage technology to further increase the comfort of your home. Our installers will go above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction in your new system and our installation performance.

Selecting Appliances with Style from Home Designer, Keffie Lancaster

Appliances keffie lancasterHome-Tech has wonderful professional relationships with many interior designers, architects and contractors in Southwest Florida.  Many of our customers are  likely to purchase appliances by the recommendation of their designer, contractor or the brands their friends and neighbors are recommended. Therefore,  we are pleased to introduce one of our very good friends, Keffie Lancaster, Associate ASID of Lancaster Interior Design in Sarasota. Keffie’s specialities include interior/exterior design, remodeling advice, window treatments, special event decor, staging, custom painting and faux finishings.

What are you seeing as the current trends in kitchen design?

Functional spaces and lots of room for friends and family! No matter the size of your home, guests always end up in the kitchen. I have noticed a shift lately, and I am designing less muli-level eating areas with bar stools and bar areas. The trend now is to create more room to work in the kitchen.  Many people have less square footage allocated to formal living spaces and choose to utilize their kitchen to display china and collectibles in glass cabinets.  Lighting and cabinetry made from reclaimed and recycled materials is also very high in demand.

appliances kitchens interior designWhat appliances, from your customers, seem to be in the most demand?

Energy-saving appliances, stainless steel appliances, and sleek designs.

Are you seeing more or less stainless steel?

I think stainless steel will always be in demand.  It goes with all styles of cabinets, matches many flooring types and is very timeless.  Second to stainless would have to be black.  I did hear a rumor that colored appliances are making a comeback, however!

Have you had any requests for redoing a laundry room?

Yes all the time!  Laundry rooms are more multi-functional than they used to be.  Families tend to need lots of work space in the laundry room.  A nice flat surface for folding, bins for organizing, and hanging space for drying clothes are all becoming important design elements. I always like to paint bright colors or hang a fun paper on the walls in the laundry room.  Let’s face it, no one wants to be in there.  Anything you can do to make it enjoyable could and should be done!

What advice can you give to a person trying to redo their kitchen on a budget?

We all have a number in mind when we start a project.  Some are big and some are small, but you can stretch your budget to make it work.  Figure out what items you might be able to do yourself, make a list of priorities, and make a list of wants and needs. Let’s just say you recently had new cabinets and floor installed in your kitchen. A corner you can cut would be to reuse your counter tops and paint them yourself.

Appliances for the kitchen interior designI always recommend accessing what will give you the best return on your investment.  New appliances and cabinets are great for resale and increase the value of your home. My favorite DIY, super budget-friendly kitchen re-do  is a fresh coat of paint on your cabinets, some new hardware and a great new wall color.

How do you feel about mixing and matching finishes?

I love the idea of mixing and matching finishes!  Too much of one finish can be overwhelming, especially in a very large kitchen.  I really like to have a contrasting finish and counter top on the island,  if there is one.  I also love glass front cabinets with colored backs to highlight glassware or collectables in the cabinet, or better yet mirrored backs, my ultimate favorite!

I also am partial to layered finishes with depth and multi-toned wood.  Zebra wood and exotics are always fun, if you can work them in the budget.

Do a lot of your customers have custom cabinetry on their appliances?

Not as much anymore because of the trend towards stainless steel appliances.  My personal preference is paneled fronts on doors of refrigerators and dishwashers whenever possible.

Satisfied Customers of Home-Tech Air Conditioning Service for 31 Years

air conditioning service agreementThirty-two years ago, my wife and I moved from Pennsylvania to Naples, Florida. We built a home on Poinciana Street. This was in 1980, and in 1981, we subscribed to your service. We never missed a year with you and told all of our friends and neighbors about Home-Tech.

After twenty years in Naples, we moved to Port Charlotte. Our air conditioning was operating as good as new after nineteen years with your service in Naples. The first thing we did in 2000 was subscribing to Home-Tech’s Service Agreement in Port Charlotte. This was a new development called Heritage Oak Park. Since 2000, many of our neighbors here are replacing their air conditioning systems. Ours is running fine, due to the care Home-Tech provides. Only the rust on the outside of the compressor proves that the air conditioning system is twelve years old.

We believe when someone provides us with good service for thirty-one years; we should be sure to acknowledge our satisfaction.

Sincerely Yours,

Dave Heckler & Marion Heckler, Port Charlotte

Air Conditioning – Fighting Allergies with Improved Indoor Air Quality

Stopair conditioning allergies holding your breath for cleaner air.  Sneezing, wheezing, coughing and sniffling are the symptoms of the all-too-familiar Florida allergy sufferer. Is that you?  Well, here’s some good news!  Home-Tech could help improve your symptoms by improving the air quality inside your home.  Our Comfort Specialists can outfit your current air conditioning system with ventilators, UV lamps, humidifiers and air purifiers to create a cleaner, fresher and healthier environment for you and your family.

Trap the Pollutants in Your Air

Home-Tech’s goal for our customers is to not only provide cool comfort, but cleaner air as well. For allergy sufferers, it means providing air conditioning solutions that trap and kill bacteria, viruses, mold spores, allergens and other pollutants from the air you breathe. Here’s a great product you should know about.  The Infinity® air purifier, for example, cleans indoor air as many as 8 times an hour with an enviable MERV rating of 15 and removes pollutants from the air that are up to 18,000 times smaller than the head of a pin.

The standard features of Carrier’s Infinity Air Purifier include:

  • Whole home air purification system
  • Long-life MERV 15 filter
  • Patented Captures and Kills technology
  • Captures up to 95% of particles .30 to 1.0 microns in size
  • Kills or inactivates up to 99% of germs, pollen and mold captured
  • Proven effective against 13 common pathogens including influenza, common cold, measles, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus and Aspergillus versicolor (a common fungus).

air conditioning products for allergy sufferersShedding Some Light on Airborne Allergens

Our ultraviolet germicidal lamps mean “lights out” for mold and bacteria. The indoor coil inside of your air conditioning system is part of what cools your home, but it and its drain pan can also be a favorite hangout of mold and bacteria. Growth of these organisms can affect efficiency and reduce airflow. They can even become airborne. Eliminating these bad boys does more than help improve your air quality, it increases your air conditioning system’s performance as well. That’s because when mold is allowed to build up on your coils, airflow can be reduced by as much as 9%. With UV lamps, coil cleaning can be a thing of the past. Simply replace the lamps once a year.

The standard features of these UV lamps include:

  • Intense UV light is designed to kill bacteria and mold growing on and around the indoor coil
  • Minimizes microbial build-up on coil and drain pan and prevents it from becoming airborne
  • Enhances air flow
  • Helps maintain system efficiency
  • Silent operation
  • 10 year limited warranty, 90-day limited warranty for bulbs

Land Ho! Discover the Savings on New Appliances this Columbus Day

appliances columbus dayToday we celebrate the Italian voyager, Christopher Columbus.  While, yes, Home-Tech does have appliances on sale, we thought we would share a short history lesson. We all know of the famous fleet, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. But, did you know it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who made this a federal holiday in 1937? Here are five more little known facts about the famous explorer and this holiday.

  1. In early colonial America, Christopher Columbus was a symbol of American nationalism.  The District of Columbia, which houses the nation’s capital, is named after the famous explorer.
  2. Columbus Day has several other names across the western world: “Discovery Day” in the Bahamas, “Día de las Americas” in Uruguay, “Día de la Hispanidad” in Europe and “Día de la Raza” in Latin American countries.
  3. Columbus’s burial location is unknown. He was buried and re-buried around the world several times, including brief stints in Spain and Haiti.
  4. In 1905, Colorado was the first state to recognize Columbus Day as an official holiday.
  5. San Francisco claims the nation’s oldest continuously existing celebration with the Italian-American community’s annual Columbus Day Parade, which was established by Nicola Larco in 1868, while New York City boasts the largest.

Air Conditioning Maintenance – Pre-Season Tips from Trane

air conditioning maintenance clean and checkThe seasons are changing. Home-Tech wants your home to be comfortable, regardless of what the calendar reads. We suggest you schedule your Clean and Check early. You wouldn’t drive your car 100,000 miles without changing the oil. The same logic holds true for your home comfort system. Regular preventative maintenance on your air conditioning and heating is the best way to ensure trouble-free operation and peak performance. Pre-season maintenance is also important. It can help to avoid a system failure in severe hot or cold weather when you need it most, and it can also keep your energy bill from getting out of control. Here is some very useful advice from our friends at Trane.

When Should You Do Air Conditioning Maintenance?

The old adage is true: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Below you’ll find our Preventative Maintenance Checklist, which is our proven method to keep your air conditioning and heating systems operating smoothly and your home in constant comfort.

  • For a system that heats and cools: perform maintenance in the spring and fall.
  • For cooling only: perform maintenance at least once a year, before the cooling season.
  • For heating only: perform maintenance at least once a year, before the heating season.

Preventative Maintenance Checklist

Home-Tech suggests customers do an annual or bi-annual preventative maintenance on their air conditioning to ensure that your system runs as efficiently as possible. You can count on Home-Tech to perform the following tasks, depending on the unit:

Outdoor Air Conditioning Units

  • Inspect unit for proper refrigerant level and adjust if necessary
  • Clean dirt, leaves and debris from inside cabinet
  • Inspect base pan for restricted drain openings—remove obstructions as necessary
  • Inspect coil and cabinet—clean as needed
  • Inspect fan motor and fan blades for wear and damage—on older models lubricate as needed
  • Inspect control box, associated controls/accessories, wiring and connections. Controls may include contactors, relays, circuit boards, capacitors, sump heat and other accessories. All control box and electrical parts should be checked for wear or damage.
  • Inspect compressor and associated tubing for damage

Indoor Air Conditioning Units

  • Inspect and clean blower assembly (includes blower housing, blower wheel and motor)
  • On older models, lubricate motor and inspect and replace fan belt if needed
  • Check combustion blower housing for lint and debris and clean as necessary
  • Inspect evaporator coil, drain pan and condensate drain lines. Clean as needed
  • Inspect for gas leaks in gas furnaces
  • Inspect burner assembly—clean and adjust as needed
  • Inspect ignition system and safety controls—clean and adjust as needed
  • Inspect heat exchanger or heating elements
  • Inspect flue system—check for proper attachment to the furnace, any dislocated sections, and for signs of corrosion. Replace if necessary.
  • Inspect control box, associated controls, wiring and connections
  • Clean or replace air filters
  • Inspect conditioned airflow system (ductwork)—check for leaks

While Your Air Conditioning System is Operating

  • Monitor system starting characteristics and capabilities
  • Listen for abnormal noise
  • Search for source of unusual odors
  • Monitor air conditioning and heat pump systems for correct refrigerant charge
  • Measure outdoor dry bulb temperature
  • Measure indoor dry and wet bulb temperature
  • Measure high and low side system pressures
  • Monitor gas furnace for correct line and manifold gas pressure—make adjustments as needed
  • Measure temperature rise and adjust airflow as needed
  • Check vent system for proper operation
  • Monitor system for correct line and load volts/amps
  • Monitor system operation per manufacturer’s specifications
  • Provide system operation report and recommend repairs or replacement as necessary
