It’s a day many people celebrate, but this might be the first time you’ve heard of it – World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The celebration of this day was initiated in 1865 by the International Telegraph Union.
None of us remember using a telegraph or getting a telegram, right? Telecommunication has changed dramatically since then, hasn’t it? That’s what #WTISD is about; celebrating the improvements in telecommunication. In case you don’t know what #WTISD is, that’s the hashtag for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Most of our Service Agreement Members used rotary phones. Some of our younger generations don’t even know how to dial a rotary phone. There is a hysterical video on YouTube showing kids reacting to rotary phones with over 11 million views! They would be shocked if they knew that back in the old days you had to talk to an operator to connect your call. What about phone booths? Kids don’t even understand what Clark Kent is entering to change into his superhero cape.
Remember the original cell phone that was so huge and bulky? It was invented by Dr. Martin “Marty” Cooper and his team at Motorola. Most of us now own a wonderful smartphone. But when is the last time you actually called someone? I’ve noticed that as my father is aging his hearing gets worse and worse. So we text mostly. After all, you can text anytime from anywhere and don’t have to be able to hear to communicate. It’s a great telecommunication tool.
Did you know there are more cell phones than there are people on Earth? Texting is the primary way people communicate today. Home-Tech understands this. That’s why we’ve made it convenient for you to use your favorite communication method. You can still call us. We will ALWAYS accept your call. But you can now text Home-Tech whenever you need a plumber, appliance repair or air conditioning repair.
If you’re looking for a refrigerator repair and you Google “refrigerator repair” on your smartphone you’ll see an ad there for Home-Tech. If you click that ad one of the things you are provided is a text link so you can start texting us directly to schedule. Also Home-Tech subscribes to a texting service that allows you to just pick up your cell phone anytime and text the word repairs to 55000.
This makes it easy for you to reach us and start the process of getting your service call set up, all through texting.
What is the future of telecommunications going to look like? Your appliances, air conditioning and thermostats are going to be dialing you! You heard right. When something is going wrong with your equipment it is going to let you know. It is also going to give you other helpful information. The Whirlpool Smart Suite for 2017 is the perfect example of this. Check out our next blog post where we will delve deeper into this topic.
Who knows what we’ll be celebrating in telecommunication breakthroughs on future #WTSID! It’s all very exciting. Home-Tech will be here to help you stay abreast of it. And you can always visit our Member Appliance Center to learn more about communicating equipment.
